How to Apply for ACCB — Step-by-Step

  1. Enrol your child in licensed CCFRI-participating care first — ACCB requires a confirmed licensed care placement. At Smiling Kids, we provide the enrollment confirmation you need for your application.
  2. Create or log into your MyGovBC account — go to my.gov.bc.ca. If you don’t have one, create it (requires BCServicesCard app for identity verification — allow 1-2 days to set up).
  3. Go to ChildCareBC.ca and click “Apply for Affordable Child Care Benefit”
  4. Gather your documents before starting:
    • Most recent CRA Notice of Assessment (both parents if applicable) — have line 15000 or 23600 ready
    • Licensed care enrollment confirmation from Smiling Kids (we provide this)
    • Employment confirmation letter from your employer, or school enrollment letter, or job-seeking declaration
    • Immigration documents (if applicable — PR card, work/study permit)
  5. Complete the online application — takes approximately 20-30 minutes when you have all documents ready
  6. CRITICAL: Apply within 30 days of your child’s care start date — ACCB is backdated to your care start date only if you apply within 30 days. Late applications start from the application date — you lose the backdated months
  7. Track your application — processing takes approximately 3-6 weeks. Check status at ChildCareBC.ca

⚠️ Most Important Rule About ACCB:
Apply within 30 days of starting care. If you apply on Day 31, you lose Day 1 through Day 30 of benefits. At $1,250/month, that is over $40/day of lost benefit for each day you delay. Apply the same day you accept your daycare offer.

ACCB FAQ

What is ACCB?

ACCB stands for Affordable Child Care Benefit. It is a BC government monthly benefit paid directly to your licensed childcare centre on your behalf, reducing what you owe each month. It is income-tested — the less you earn, the more you receive, up to approximately $1,250/month for infants.

How is ACCB different from CCFRI?

CCFRI is automatic — it applies to everyone enrolled at a CCFRI-participating centre regardless of income, reducing fees by approximately $850/month. ACCB requires an application and is income-tested — only families under approximately $111,000 household income qualify. Both apply at the same time and stack on top of each other.

How long does ACCB take to process?

ACCB applications typically process in 3-6 weeks. If approved after you’ve already paid full fees, SDSI will calculate the backdated amount and apply it to future invoices. There is no cash payment — it is credited against your childcare fees.

Does ACCB continue automatically?

No — ACCB requires annual renewal. SDSI will send you a renewal notice. You will need your updated CRA Notice of Assessment for the renewal. If you miss the renewal deadline, benefits stop and you must reapply — risking a gap in coverage.

Can self-employed parents get ACCB?

Yes — self-employed parents in BC qualify for ACCB if their net self-employment income (after expenses) plus any other household income is under the threshold. Use your T2125 (Statement of Business Income) as the basis for your income documentation.
